Canal Monitoring

Boat electrofisher in CAP canal

The Gila River Basin Native Fishes Conservation Program has developed and implemented a long-term monitoring program to examine the presence and distribution of non-native fish in the Central Arizona Project (CAP) and its primary connected waters. These locations include the CAP aqueducts, SRP canals, Florence-Casa Grande Canal, Gila River below Coolidge Dam, Salt River between Stewart Mountain Dam and Granite Reef Dam, San Pedro River downstream of the US/Mexico border, and the Cienega Creek Preserve. Monitoring at these sites occurred annually from 1995 – 2010; however, in recent years, emphasis has shifted towards monitoring wild populations of listed fishes in the Gila River basin (see Stream Monitoring page). The CAP and its primary connected waters are now monitored every 5 years.
