National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) and Streamlining

Reclamation is the largest wholesaler of water and the second largest producer of hydroelectric power in the country. We are responsible for numerous programs, initiatives and activities supporting the western states, Indian Tribes and others to meet water and power needs and balance the multitude of competing needs in the West.

The National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) applies to the implementation of many of our responsibilities and activities, with the goal of ensuring that information regarding environmental impacts is available to decision makers and the public before decisions are made. The Department of the Interior (Reclamation's parent agency) and the Council on Environmental Quality (CEQ) have NEPA implementing regulations. Reclamation also has regulatory procedures in the Departmental Manual, policies under the Reclamation Manual, and guidance to implement NEPA.Find our requirements and guidance by following the links below and learn about our streamlining efforts under Secretarial Order 3355: "Streamlining NEPA Reviews and Implementation of Executive Order 13807, 'Establishing Discipline and Accountability in the Environmental Review and Permitting Process for Infrastructure Projects.'"
