The soil around the dam site is heavy clay — mudslides are an ongoing problem. Winter rains in 1937 loosen a hillside on the east side of the river. MWAK engineers decide to freeze a portion of the hill to keep it in place. Workers drive 100 two-inch pipes into the clay and fill them with super-cooled salt brine.
