Identifying the formation and reduction of nitrosamines in the Mni Wiconi Water Treatment Plant

Research Question

How do we conduct water treatment analysis to determine processes or chemical addition, which contributes to formation of emerging disinfection by-products?

Need and Benefit

The primary focus of this research is to identify the presence of precursors or treatment practices that lead to the formation of nitrosamines in the Mni Wiconi Water Treatment Plant and evaluate a preferred method of action for reducing their formation. The methodology used in this case study could be applied to other authorized regional rural water systems funded through Reclamation, such as Fort Peck Reservation/Dry Prairie Rural Water System,Rocky Boy's/North Central Rural Water System, etc., which use similar treatment or disinfection practices for the treatment of surface water. This is the second phase of the investigation study. During FY2015, water analysis was completed to determine the existence of nitrosamines in finished water and corroborate levels throughout the distribution system throughout the year. It has been determined that nitrosamines do exist in the distribution system. FY2016 will focus on the treatment process, from raw water to finished water, to determine what specific step(s) in the treatment train are contributing to the formation of nitrosamines. In addition, steps to mitigate the formation in the treatment process will be investigated and implemented.
