Machine Condition Monitoring - Enhance and expand Reclamation developed Machine Condition Monitoring (MCM) system. System utilizes in-house developed software and commercial data acquisition hardware.

Project ID: 20012
Principal Investigator: Jim DeHaan
Research Topic: Improved Power Generation
Funded Fiscal Years: 2020, 2021 and 2022
Keywords: None

Research Question

This project will identify how Reclamation can further utilize condition monitoring data acquisition systems to reduce operation and maintenance costs while simultaneously ensuring and enhancing plant sustainability, reliability, and operation. The current systems will be evaluated for expansion to include turbine rough zone monitoring, cavitation monitoring, generator core and frame vibration monitoring and rotor airgap plots.

Need and Benefit

Software is "free" to Reclamation facilities. A MCM system utilizing this software can be installed for significantly lower costs than commercially available monitoring systems while providing nearly the same level of performance. The system also can easily be expanded to meet future needs.
