Multi-Irrigation Demonstration Farm - Sponsored by: Diné College

Reclamation provided technical and financial assistance to Diné College to establish a multi-irrigation demonstration farm near Shiprock, New Mexico. The demonstration allowed water users to view new or unfamilar water management practices that promoted good water management. The project encouraged improved production methods for traditional Navajo varieties of corn, squash, melon, vegetables, and ornamental crops. The demonstration was also designed to improve farm production and marketing that would allow irrigators to finance, in the long term, the operation and maintenance of the affected canal systems through annual water assessments paid to their respective ditch entities. The college hired a farm manager and the farm was operational in FY2001.
