Research Question

What research should we perform during a conducting study to develop a concrete repair material compatibility guideline that would be practical for engineering use?
What knowledge do we need to expand upon as it relates to concrete repair material compatibility before a guideline can be developed?
As stated in the description for this scoping study, the compatibility of concrete repair materials with its existing environment and concrete substrate is a complex issue with many different factors. Before a conducting study can take place, researchers need to determine if all the factors related to compatibility have been identified and if any further investigations of those factors need to be conducted. The field of concrete repair material compatibility can be very broad, so this study will coordinate focus groups that will identify the key issues and research efforts that would lead to usable guidelines in the future.

Need and Benefit

Need: The field of concrete repair material compatibility and the issues related to incompatibility affect every concrete repair project. Unfortunately, repairs often end up failing prematurely, creating additional costly repairs down the road.
Urgency: Currently, without guidelines as to how to overcome the issues related to concrete repair material compatibility, Reclamation's concrete repair team has relied on previous experience and anecdotal observations when recommending and specifying repair materials. But what if there was a better way to determine what repair material should be used? The sooner Reclamation and the repair industry can come together and develop guidelines, the sooner repairs can become more reliable and durable.
