Description:
Abstract: The underlying goal of this project is to develop an integrated water management/habitat response tool that will allow the BOR to quantify the feasibility, effectiveness, and risks associated with various management alternatives, including re-regulation of reservoir releases under current water supplies and demand scenarios, potential increases in water availability of 500 - 800 KAF through import of water from the Columbia River and construction of the Black Rock storage facility, or combinations thereof. This study would meet two primary objectives necessary to achieve this goal: (1) Development of multiple habitat response models capable of quantifying wetted area in the EDT habitat units and area of SSCV habitat associated with the EDT units as a function of discharge. (2) Development and integration of a decision support system, compatible with RiverWare and EDT, that can be used to quantify the temporal distribution of wetted area of the EDT habitat units and SSCV patch characteristics under different management scenarios. Purpose: This dataset will be used to estimate a range of variables at the following flows for the Wapato and Union Gap Reaches: Union Gap Reach - 1000, 2000, 3000, 4000, 5000, 6000, 7000, 8000, 9000, 10000 Wapato Reach - 300, 500, 750, 1491, 2000, 2450, 5000, 7500, 15000

Reclamation conducted the 2D hydraulic modeling for the Easton, Kittitas, and Naches reaches. The USGS conducted the 2D hydraulic modeling for the Union Gap and Wapato reaches. Therefore, separate metadata files have been developed for these two sets of information. Supplemental_Information: This dataset has been modified by the Bureau of Reclamation's UCAO office to better follow the format of Reclamation modeled reaches for the same study. The changes are listed in the last paragraph of the 'process' section.

Therefore, if requesting data or clarification about the data from the USGS, instead of Reclamation, it will be beneficial to read about these modifications.

Data may be obtained from the original USGS source or from Reclamation. Both contacts are listed under the 'distribution' section. If this metadata has been exported into some format other than ESRI software, both contacts may not be included. The USGS has valid contact information throughout this metadata record. The general physical address for Reclamation is: 1917 Marsh Road; Yakima, WA 98901. The general phone number is: (509) 575-5848.

Attribute_Accuracy:
Attribute_Accuracy_Report: Bureau of Reclamation's UCAO office received the modeling data from the USGS and have modified minor parts of it. The changes below could have resulting in some inaccuracies of the valiables, although it would be very minor. This is described in more detail at the end of the "Process Step" section. 1) Water surface elevation and water depth values for locations with a froude number of 0 were changed to -3.2808 (null value used in USBR modeled areas). 2) Water velocity values were changed to a value of 0 (to be consistent with USBR modeled areas) for locations with a froude number of 0. Logical_Consistency_Report: NoneCompleteness_Report: Water variables were simulated from a two dimensional hydrodynamic model starting at rivermile 103.8, 1/4 mile south of Sunnyside diversion dam, and ending at rivermile 93.7, 1 .5 miles north of SR22 bridge at Toppenish. Positional_Accuracy: Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy: Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy_Report: Final accuracy unknown, but positional data used for hydrodynamic modeling was collected using USGS bathymetric sonar, RTK GPS and Total Station data. Vertical_Positional_Accuracy: Vertical_Positional_Accuracy_Report: Final accuracy unknown, but positional data used for hydrodynamic modeling was collected using USGS bathymetric sonar, RTK GPS and Total Station data.

Quantitative_Vertical_Positional_Accuracy_Assessment:
Vertical_Positional_Accuracy_Value: 0.15
Vertical_Positional_Accuracy_Explanation: Accuracy range is 2cm for total station and RTK elevation to 15cm for sonar data.

Process_Step:
Process_Description: Model ouput variables were estimated for the Gap Reach of the Yakima River under steady-state flow by means of two-dimensional hydrodynamic modeling. The River 2D model used a two-dimensional finite element method to solve the two-dimensional shallow water flow equations. For a detailed explanation of the model, see Ghanem, A.H., P.M. Steffler, F.E. Hicks, and C. Katopodis, 1995, Two-dimensional finite element modeling of aquatic habitats:, Water Resources Engineering Report No. 95-S1, Department of Civil Engineering, University of Alberta, Edmonton, Alberta. The conditions simulated were for a flow of 42.48 cu. m/s with a downstream water surface elevation of 239.66 m. The bed elevation surface upon which the hydrodynamic simulation was based was derived from multiple survey methods ranging from both topographic and water penatrating Lidar to USGS RTK surveys that were used to fill in data gaps. Final mesh was irregulary spaced varying between 2.5 and 25 meters. Final CDG files from River2D were imported into ArGIS. The final data set is in the form of a ArcGIS shapefile.

Bureau of Reclamation's UCAO office received the modeling data from the USGS and have modified minor parts of it. The changes are listed below: 1) Metadata keywords changed to include both location and theme information. 2) Attribute names changed to reflect same naming convertions of USBR modeling work. 3) Vertical and horizontal accuracies changed from a value representing units in centimeters to units in meters. 4) Water surface elevation and water depth values for locations with a froude number of 0 were changed to -3.2808 (null value used in USBR modeled areas). For the Wapato Reach at any modeled flow, this effected less that 0.006% of the total 2D modeling points in the entire data set and less than 0.028% of the pool designated 2D modeling points. The average depth of water in these areas was 0.33 inches. 5) Water velocity values were changed to a value of 0 (to be consistent with USBR modeled areas) for locations with a froude number of 0. 6) Certain attributes were deleted.
