WYDOT Use Authorization: Gravel Extraction and Processing at Alpine Bear Pit

The Alpine Bear Pit is the name used to refer to an area approximately 0.5 miles southwest of Alpine, Wyoming, that encompasses 317 acres in total within federal lands acquired for the operation of Palisades Dam and Reservoir. The Alpine Bear Pit area straddles the Idaho and Wyoming border at the east edge of Palisades Reservoir, west of U.S. Highway 89.

Reclamation has granted a 20-year license to the Wyoming Department of Transportation for gravel extraction, crushing, and processing operations to occur on approximately 77 acres of federally owned land in the Alpine Bear Pit area. WYDOT is authorized to extract approximately 1,000,000 cubic yards of borrow and crushing material during the length of the authorization. This 20-year Land Use Permit (12-07-14-LA717) was executed on 13 June 2017 and is valid through 12 June 2037.

An environmental assessment was completed prior to the issuance of this authorization. The EA and Finding of No Significant Impact are linked below.
