North Unit Irrigation District Piping Project

The Bureau of Reclamation intends to award a WaterSMART grant to the North Unit Irrigation District to pipe a 1900-foot segment of lateral 58-3-2, northeast of Madras, Oregon. This project will conserve 90-acre feet of water per year that would otherwise be lost to evaporation and seepage. The water conserved by this piping project will remain in district to benefit water patrons. The project will also help reduce sediment and pesticide loading into Mud Springs and Trout Creek, increase delivery efficiencies, and enhance public safety.

To analyze potential impacts associated with this project, Reclamation is preparing an analysis document as required by the National Environmental Policy Act and conducted Section 106 consultation as required by the National Historic Preservation Act. Piping of the lateral was determined as an adverse effect as defined by 36CFR800.5. Reclamation is preparing a memorandum of agreement to resolve the adverse effect and is in the process of identifying appropriate consulting parties to participate in the MOA.

Questions on the project may be directed to Mr. Gregg Garnett, Bend Field Office Manager, Bureau of Reclamation, 1375 SE Wilson Ave., Bend, OR 97702-2607.
