Sidewalks are being added to Riverside campground's overnight and day-use areas

HELENA, Mont. – Reclamation will close the Riverside Campground starting September 13th at 4 p.m., through Spring 2027. During this time, all Riverside campsites will be closed to accommodate construction of new sidewalks in and around the campground and day-use areas. The Riverside boat launch, dock, and parking area will remain open to the public, although parking may be limited at times. Additionally, Canyon Ferry's five other campgrounds (White Earth, Hellgate, Jo Bonner, Chinamen's, and Court Sheriff) remain open, along with their respective amenities.
The Riverside closures will prioritize visitor safety and efficiency. As soon as the project is complete, campsites will reopen, and we will post an update on our website. Thank you for your understanding, and please direct any questions to the contacts listed above.
Facts about Canyon Ferry:
Construction on Canyon Ferry Dam began in May of 1948 and was completed in June of 1954. The dam, powerplant, and reservoir constitute the Canyon Ferry Unit. Canyon Ferry Reservoir offers a wide range of water resources, including flood prevention, hydropower generation, irrigation, fish and wildlife habitat, and recreation opportunities.
Canyon Ferry Reservoir is located approximately 15 miles east of Helena. Travel East on East Custer Avenue, which turns into Canyon Ferry Road, approximately 15 miles to the dam.
Canyon Ferry Reservoir offers excellent fishing opportunities for rainbow trout, perch, ling, and walleye, with 33,500 surface acres of water and 96 shoreline miles. Concrete boat ramps, campgrounds (referenced above), day-use areas, shelters, swimming, and three marinas are also available. View available recreation information here.
