Bureau of Reclamation allocates an additional $1.4 million for 13 science and technology projects to support water management research

Reclamation will be using previous research findings to study treating brackish groundwater for potable use using renewable energy.Science and technology research in water management is important for the Bureau of Reclamation to assist its water and power facility managers, customers and stakeholders. Building on the previous announcement of $3.9 million for 49 projects, Reclamation is funding an additional 13 projects with $1.4 million to support water management research.

The projects selected include study of corrosion inspection and corrosion protection and control systems, improving distributed hydrologic models, adhesion strength of protective coatings, renewable energy powered desalination systems, and improving low-elevation snowpack forecasts. Reclamation is partnering with Army Corps of Engineers, NOAA’s Missouri Basin River Forecast Center, Naval Research Laboratory, Navajo Nation, New Mexico State University, New Mexico Office of the State Engineer, Elephant Butte Irrigation District, and New Mexico State Parks.

Reclamation identified these research projects through a competitive call for proposals throughout the organization. The proposals were reviewed and ranked based on technical validity and relevance to Reclamation's mission. Many of these projects partner with internal and/or external entities to produce robust and comprehensive solutions.

All projects are submitted through a competitive process. Many of these research projects address research priority needs identified in the S&T Programs Science Strategy Implementation Plan that is published annually. In addition, Reclamation's regional directors provide a list of research needs each year resulting in new projects being selected to meet those needs.
