Lake Berryessa Park Rangers Out and About This Spring!

Park Ranger Jennifer Onufer teaches children the importance of water for agriculture at Napa County’s Agriculture in the Classroom Day. Lake Berryessa park rangers have been busy this spring attending events around Napa and Solano importance of water for agriculture and water conservation. In March, park rangers attended events such as the Napa Farm Bureau’s Agriculture in the Classroom Day at the Napa Expo Center and the Solano County Fair Association’s 15th Annual Youth Ag Day at the Solano County Fairgrounds in Vallejo, California.

Both events introduced Napa and Solano county elementary school students to agriculture and its importance. Groups of 10 to 15 children stopped by Reclamation’s booth and listened to an introduction on where Lake Berryessa is located and where our water travels. Next, the children learned how many gallons of water it takes to produce certain agricultural products. For example, it takes 4 gallons of water to produce one head of lettuce and 65 gallons of water to produce one eight-ounce glass of milk. Finally, park rangers challenged participants to find activities they can do at home to conserve water. Both events were a great learning experience for participants, and Reclamation park rangers were happy to participate.

Water conservation continues to be a popular topic for event organizers and Lake Berryessa park rangers have been invited to present more on this topic at Yolo County Farm Bureau’s Farm Connection Day on May 5, 2017. At this event Yolo County students are invited to the Yolo County Fairgrounds to spend their day learning about and experiencing agriculture from the industry's experts.
