On Sunday, June 5, 2016, the Bureau of Reclamation’s Lake Berryessa Field Office (Napa, California) celebrated World Environment Day with an impressive shoreline cleanup.

Lake Berryessa Park Ranger Brian Gatt worked with Marianne Butler, Environmental Education Program Manager for the Solano Resource Conservation District, to organize a large number of enthusiastic volunteers who came to the lake to help clean up a section of shoreline between Markley Cove and Monticello Dam.

Throughout the morning, 84 committed volunteers and 15 dedicated employees worked to collect 175 pounds of recyclable materials and 262 pounds of trash for a combined total of 437 pounds collected!

Berryessa Boat Rental volunteered their time and pontoon boat to pick up the numerous bags of debris along the shoreline and transport them to the launch ramp at Markley Cove for disposal.

As their “reward” for a job well done, all of the volunteers received a t-shirt and a tasty hot lunch at Markley Cove Resort at the end of the cleanup event.

World Environment Day is held each year on June 5. It was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1972 and is celebrated the world over in many ways, including street rallies, parades, concerts, tree plantings, and cleanup campaigns.

Lake Berryessa staff looks forward to continuing to work in the coming years with the Solano Resource Conservation District on this worthwhile event.
