Construction contract helps River Mountains Loop Trail trek toward completion

A $617,730 contract recently awarded by the Bureau of Reclamation to Capriati Construction Corporation, Inc., of Las Vegas, Nevada, will provide the final connection of a multi use trail connecting Hoover Dam to Boulder City and beyond.
The company will begin work on the 5-foot wide concrete pathway at a site near Hoover Dam this month, building the segment of trail from the Hoover Dam switchyard to the top floor of the Hoover Dam Visitors Center parking garage. Completion of this segment is anticipated in July 2004.
This project is funded in part by a grant from the Southern Nevada Public Lands Management Act, which supports the development of recreational facilities on federal property in southern Nevada through the sale of federal lands within the Las Vegas Valley. It is being completed in partnership with the Lake Mead National Recreation Area.
The Historic Railroad Trail runs along the old railroad grade used during the construction of Hoover Dam. The Historic Railroad Trail Spur links the dam to the 35-mile River Mountains Loop Trail system, which also is under construction.
In addition, the Federal Highway Administration is building a connecting segment of the Historic Railroad Trail as part of the Nevada approach to the new Hoover Dam Bridge. It extends from tunnel Number 5, near the Lake Mead Overlook, to the dam's switchyard.
When the Historic Railroad Trail is completed in 2007, it will connect Hoover Dam with Boulder City, the Lake Mead National Recreation Area, Wetlands Park, Henderson, or the Las Vegas valley via the River Mountains Loop Trail. Six miles of the Historic Railroad Trail, including the five train tunnels, can be accessed from trailheads in Boulder City and the National Park Service's Alan Bible Visitor Center.
