Karla Smiley to Assume Responsibilities of Assistant Director of Information Resources

Commissioner Michael L. Connor is proud to announce Karla Smiley will be assuming the responsibilities of the Assistant Director of Information Resources (ADIR) effective next week. Smiley, the former Bureau Procurement Chief for Reclamation will be responsible for providing information management resources to Reclamation and will serve as a liaison to the Department of the Interior as it progresses through its Information Technology Transformation.

"Karla Smiley has shown a commitment to Reclamation's mission and, throughout her career, has worked to ensure the federal government has obtained quality supplies and services, on time and within budget to ensure the public and our stakeholders get the maximum benefit for their investment," Commissioner Connor said today. "Her dedication and professionalism will provide an outstanding foundation as she works to carry out Reclamation's continued implementation of Secretary Salazar's Information Technology Transformation effort."

Smiley, who joined Reclamation in 2004, brings a wealth of experience from her thirty-year career with the federal government. She has supported Reclamation’s mission through her oversight and management of acquisition, financial assistance, integrated charge card, facility and property management, fleet and multi-sector workforce programs. In addition to many other impressive roles, she was instrumental in Reclamation’s accomplishments under the Recovery Act, participated in Reclamation’s Managing for Excellence action plan and has served as chair to Reclamation’s Acquisition and Leadership Team and the Department of the Interior’s Acquisition Management Partnership.

Throughout her accomplished career, Smiley has held positions in the Department of the Interior, Department of Defense, Department of Army and the U.S. Forest Service. Outside of acquisition, she has had the opportunity to work in a variety of positions in both military and civilian agencies, including employee development, budget, information resources, engineering and logistics.

Smiley is a graduate of the Department of the Interior’s Senior Executive Service Career Development Program, and she also holds a Master’s degree in Business Administration with a concentration in Contract Management from Florida Institute of Technology. An Illinois native, she additionally holds Bachelor of Arts degrees in both Business Administration and Economics from St. Ambrose University in Davenport, Iowa.
