Reclamation moves forward with Goose Bay Marina recreation improvement plan

BILLINGS, Mont. -- The Bureau of Reclamation has begun developing improvement plan alternatives for Goose Bay Marina, a federally managed 230-acre recreation site located at Canyon Ferry Reservoir just east of Helena, Mont. The initial alternatives will focus on modernization themes to meet future public outdoor recreation needs for residents throughout Montana.
The proposed improvements are intended to support a blend of dispersed camping and developed facilities that add to the diversity of recreation opportunities and experiences at Canyon Ferry Reservoir. Improvements to be considered could include, but are not limited to; a large public pavilion, rental cabins, handicap accessible amenities, fish-cleaning station, group camping area, a day use area, modernized campground loops, and picnic shelters.
"Reclamation has a unique opportunity at this time to work with the public and set the stage for investing in the necessary infrastructure that will allow for a marina makeover for future generations to enjoy," said acting Montana Area Office Manager Tom Sawatzke.
The public will have the opportunity to provide input and assist Reclamation in defining the future concession and recreation opportunities that should be provided within the Goose Bay Planning Area. Reclamation plans to hold a public meeting to share information and obtain input at the end of January 2013.
Reclamation has established a website to keep the public informed about future plans and improvements. The web site, located at www.usbr.gov/gp/mtao/canyonferry/goosebay, includes public meeting information, project documents maps, background information and photographs.
"We are using a planning process to get us to a preferred alternative that will guide future improvements that occur at Goose Bay Marina," said acting Canyon Ferry Facility Manager, Shawn Bryant, "Once the recreation improvement plan is complete, the first modernization to pursue is updated utilities, which would include a new electrical service and septic system to meet the future need and to protect the environment at Goose Bay Marina."
The Canyon Ferry Unit, part of the Pick-Sloan Missouri Basin Program, is a multi-purpose project providing power supply, recreation, flood control, and irrigation in the upper Missouri Basin. Principal structures are the Canyon Ferry Dam and Powerplant, about 17-miles northeast of Helena, Mont.
