Reclamation Releases Draft Environmental Documents for Warren Act Contract and License with Delta Lands Reclamation District No. 770

Media Contact: Pete Lucero, MP Region Public Affairs Officer, (916)978-5100, plucero@usbr.gov

For Release: January 13, 2012

The Bureau of Reclamation has released for public review the Draft Environmental Assessment and Draft Finding of No Significant Impact for a Warren Act contract and license with Delta Lands Reclamation District No. 770.

Reclamation's approval of a Warren Act contract and license, both to be executed for a 25-year period, would allow the Delta Lands Reclamation District No. 770 (District) to redirect floodwater from the Kings, St. John’s (a tributary channel of the Kaweah River), and Tule Rivers into the excess capacity of the Friant-Kern Canal, in accordance with the terms and conditions of the Warren Act contract and stakeholders. The Friant-Kern Canal is a feature of the Central Valley Project's Friant Division.

The District needs the Warren Act contract to protect agricultural lands and public improvements in the Tulare Lakebed from floodwaters. The District needs the license to store, operate, and maintain pumping facilities along the Friant-Kern Canal. The proposed license would allow the District to insert and operate the pumps that will introduce the floodwaters into the canal, as needed, and provide the District access for equipment maintenance.

The Draft Environmental Assessment and Finding of No Significant Impact (Draft EA/FONSI) were prepared in accordance with the National Environmental Policy Act, and are available online at
