For Release: January 12, 2005

The Bureau of Reclamation (Reclamation) today released the Final Environmental Assessment (EA) and Finding of No Significant Impact (FONSI) evaluating the effects of a rock fish passage structure located on the Colorado River near Price-Stubb Dam.

The Price-Stubb Diversion Dam had previously been identified by officials with the Upper Colorado River Endangered Fish Recovery Program as one of the primary barriers to natural migration of endangered fish that live in stretches of the Upper Colorado River. Restored fish passage above existing diversions, through the rock structure, will provide the endangered fish with access to an additional 50 miles of critical upstream habitat.

The Recovery Program is an interagency partnership created to recover four endangered Colorado River fishes while allowing for continued and future water development.

The EA and FONSI were prepared by Reclamation staff in cooperation with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and are required components of the National Environmental Policy Act process. Reclamation identified the Downstream Rock Fish Passage Alternative with or without Whitewater Features as the preferred passage alternative. This alternative has the least impacts and most potential benefits of the alternatives for recreation, hydropower, endangered fish, and water users.
