Media Contact: Lynnette Wirth, 916-978-5100, lwirth@mp.usbr.gov

For Release: January 20, 2009

The Bureau of Reclamation's Lahontan Basin Area Office is requesting public comments on a proposed action to provide Federal funding to The Nature Conservancy (TNC) for acquisition costs of land around Independence Lake, located near Truckee, California. Public comments will be considered during the development of a Draft Environmental Assessment (EA), to be completed in Spring 2009. In addition to acquisition costs, funding would also be provided for fishery research and monitoring and project management, which would include personnel, supplies, and services.

Reclamation is directed by Public Law 110-161 to provide funding for acquisition of the land and for protection of the native fishery and water quality of Independence Lake. TNC plans to continue existing fisheries research and monitoring in the Independence Lake area. TNC is also exploring potential land management ideas for future implementation after the acquisition, including forest management to minimize wildfire hazards and public recreation management.

Comments on the proposed action are requested to assist with identification of any potential environmental issues, concerns, and alternatives that should be addressed in the Draft EA. Written comments should be sent by Friday, February 6, 2009, to Mrs. Caryn Huntt DeCarlo, Bureau of Reclamation, 705 N. Plaza St., Room 320, Carson City, Nevada 89701 or e-mailed to chunttdecarlo@mp.usbr.gov.

Another opportunity to comment on the project will occur during a 30-day public comment period when the Draft EA is completed. For additional information, please contact Mrs. Huntt DeCarlo at 775-884-8352, TDD 775-882-3436.
