The Bureau of Reclamation is issuing a warning to motorists using the roadway across Hungry Horse Dam to anticipate traffic delays while maintenance is performed on the dam located off Highway 2 in Hungry Horse, Mont.

Crews will be working on the dam's selective withdrawal system connected to the upstream face of the dam. Traffic delays may occur while crossing the dam as crews operate the large gantry crane that rides along tracks on the dam crest.

Warning signs are located at each end of the dam and flaggers will direct traffic as needed. At least one full traffic lane will be operational as flaggers direct vehicles past the work area.

Traffic restrictions will be in effect between 6:30 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. daily.

Maintenance crews will be working the following dates: September 11-14; September 17-21; September 24-28; and October 1-5.

The selective withdrawal system was installed on all four unit penstock intakes in 1995. This system is used from the first of June to the end of October to regulate the temperature of discharge water, which benefits downstream fish.

Hungry Horse Dam stands 564 feet tall and was completed in 1953. It is located on the south fork of the Flathead River, 15 miles south of the west entrance to Glacier National Park and 20 miles northeast of Kalispell, Mont.
