The Bureau of Reclamation awarded a $3 million contract to modernize six elevator systems at Grand Coulee Dam located on the Columbia River in north central Washington. ClayCo, Inc., of Groveland, Florida, was awarded the contract on January 9, 2007.

The most important components of the work include overall improvements to the elevators systems such as individual elevator control systems, hoist motors, traveling electrical cables and fire alarm and suppression systems.

"This work will ensure that the continued operation of Grand Coulee Dam is safe and dependable," said Commissioner Robert W. Johnson. "The modernization of these elevator systems is an important element in our commitment to safety and security at the dam."

Grand Coulee Dam was completed in 1942 and serves as a multipurpose facility providing water for irrigation, recreation, fish and wildlife, hydroelectric power production, and also flood control.
