Sunday, January 21, 2007, 1:00 p.m., "The Life Zones of Heron Point."

Join Park Ranger Alex Encoyand for a two mile walk on the Heron Point Trail and learn about the various communities of animals and plants surrounding New Melones Lake. What trees are found on north sloping hills versus south sloping hills? What animal left those tracks in the mud? Ranger Encoyand will describe how to identify local tree species and the unique characteristics that enable them to live here. He will discuss the various animals that live in the area, how to identify their tracks, and their interrelationships. The Heron Point Trail is located in Tuttletown Recreation Area on Robinson's Ferry Road.

Saturday, January 27, 2007, 10:00 a.m., "Table Mountain Winter Vistas."

The short steep series of switch backs leading to the top of Table Mountain is a challenging three mile round trip excursion. The memorable mid-winter views of New Melones Lake and distant snow capped Sierra Nevada Mountains make this adventure well worth the effort. Geology and natural history will be explored.

Programs may be cancelled due to inclement weather. Participants should wear good hiking shoes, clothing approporate for the weather, and bring water. Pre-registration is required for both events and can be made by calling the New Melones Lake Visitor Center at 209-536-9543. The Visitor Center's operating hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Wednesday through Sunday and closed Monday and Tuesdays.

For more information, please call the New Melones Lake Visitor Center, or stop by and tour the museum and bookstore, located on Highway 49 midway between the historic gold rush towns of Sonora and Angels Camp.
