Evaluating Fiber Reinforced Concrete for Use in Canal Construction and Canal Repairs

Research Question
Reclamation canals are typically constructed using unreinforced concrete. The canals are prone to cracking thus allowing seepage from the canal, reducing the amount of water delivered. The addition of fibers may reduce the potential for cracking within the unreinforced concrete therefore minimizing seepage from the canal.
Is fiber reinforced concrete a viable alternative for concrete canal construction and repair?
Can the addition of fibers reduce cracking and increase durability of unreinforced canal repairs and construction? Will service life be extended by adding fibers, reducing O&M costs?
Need and Benefit
Reclamation has hundreds of aging canals in it's inventory, effecting all regions. These concrete canals are in need of economical, durable repair or replacement. If successful, this research could provide an economical repair material alternate that could increase the service life of the canal and potentially reduce the O&M costs. Reclamation does not use fiber reinforced concrete regularly. The technology has been utilized successfully in the private sector for years and Reclamation should become more familiar with the availability and advantages of using fiber reinforced concrete.
