Alan Mikkelsen is the Bureau of Reclamation's Deputy Commissioner.
He has an extensive background in mediation and facilitation, including owning his own company working with Tribes and water users in Montana. Mikkelsen has represented various public and private natural resource clients; consulting in land acquisition, management, wildlife, timber and agricultural issues. He has represented various irrigation districts before the U.S. Congress. He also served as the treasurer for the National Water Resources Association while representing Montana on NWRA's Board of Directors. Mikkelsen also served as chief of staff for Congressman Denny Rehberg of Montana from 2001-2002 and executive director of the Flathead Joint Board of Control from 1985-1995.
In addition, he has also served as a police officer, farmer/rancher, pilot, and an Idaho licensed fishing guide on the Clearwater River.
Mikkelsen studied Agricultural Economics at the University of Montana and Montana State University and took classes in water law, Indian law and Indian Water Law from the University of Colorado in Boulder, Colorado.
