The Bureau of Reclamation projects and reservoirs provide ample recreation opportunities across the 17 Western states.

Reclamation and its 66 Federal and non-Federal managing partners manage more than 300 developed recreation areas throughout the West. Also, Reclamation and its partners have cooperative agreements with various for-profit and nonprofit organizations to facilitate outdoor recreation opportunities, including hunting and fishing. These recreation areas include more than 550 campgrounds.

Reclamation projects have created a variety of recreation opportunities along rivers downstream from dams, including world-class whitewater rafting and fishing opportunities. In other instances, Reclamation projects support eleven national wildlife refuges and state wildlife management areas, and twelve designated National Recreation Areas, which provide recreation activities like camping, hiking, hunting, photography, and wildlife viewing.

Throughout the West, Reclamation has more than 35 visitor centers and 40 educational interpretive programs for youth and adults that provide information about Reclamation’s dams and canals, and information about fish and wildlife populations. Reclamation and its partners also regularly issue permits for outfitting and guiding opportunities that include hunting and fishing on Reclamation lands and water bodies.

In total, recreation at Reclamation facilities contribute $3.24 billion and supports 23,368 jobs.

As you begin planning your upcoming outdoor adventures, consider visiting one of Reclamation’s recreation facilities throughout the West.

Prize Competition

A video describing the patogens prize competition at the Bureau of Reclamation.

As western U.S. water demand grows and water supplies become scarcer, wastewater reuse is becoming an increasingly important water management strategy. Wastewater is a drought-resistant and reliable water source that is readily available in urban centers for beneficial reuse. Bureau of Reclamation and Xylem, Inc, in collaboration with the Water Research Foundation and the Environmental Protection Agency are seeking the development of rapid, more accurate pathogen detection technologies that can facilitate public and regulatory acceptance of direct potable reuse. Ideas are being sought through a prize competition in which crowdsourcing is used to find and award the best ideas.
