Catch a Special Thrill (C.A.S.T.) for Kids is an extraordinary outdoor event which teams up with sponsors throughout central Oregon with area youngsters for a day of fishing. It's one of those rare events in our community that focuses on children with special needs or long term illnesses, and other youth who come to fish and appreciate the natural resources available to them in their own back yard.
This was the 17th year C.A.S.T. for Kids was held at Prineville Reservoir. The event was sponsored by some of the greatest volunteers our community has to offer. During the event, it was obvious that the children learned skills they can use for the rest of their lives. The sponsors and volunteers also learned a precious lesson about life and giving back to their communities.
The event got underway with opening remarks, introductions, and a boat safety briefing. Kids and parents dispersed and headed to the boat loading area where they were fitted with a life vest. They soon climbed the steps into the boats and got their photos taken as they each gave a big smile. Then off they went to catch the big one. The scene could have been taken from a movie, scores of family members and volunteers shouting good luck to the kids as the boats were backed down to the water for their journey's departure. Upon their return, the air was buzzing with fish stories as we all gathered around for a wonderful barbecue and awards ceremony.
Special thanks to all of our many volunteers and sponsors on a job well done! This year's sponsors include: Bureau of Reclamation, Prineville Oregon State Parks, Prineville Kiwanis, Prineville Grocery Outlet's, Central Oregon Bass Club, Crook County Search & Rescue, Crook County Sheriff Marine Board, Crook County Sheriff's Dept., Bigfoot Beverages, Sportsman's Warehouse, Ray's Food Place, The Dawg House, Brothers Restaurant, Apple Peddler, Eberhard Dairy, Starbucks, The National Fish Carvers Guild, Zebco, Plano, Mike's Auto Glass, and all the boat captains.
They say, a picture is worth a thousand words...this one sums up nearly all of them. Talk about perspective! Enjoy the little things in life...for one day you'll look back and realize they were the big things.
