Historically, Reclamation has been an engineering and construction agency. Although this initial mission has been accomplished, we employ our collective experience and expertise in managing, developing, and protecting water and related resources. Reclamation's Provo Area Office, located in Provo, Utah, works in partnership with federal and state agencies, water user groups that operate federal facilities, and other organizations, on a variety of projects.
The Provo Area Office's geographic area of responsibility encompasses Utah, southwestern Wyoming, southeastern Idaho, and extreme eastern Nevada. The 17 Reclamation projects constructed within this project area include: 27 major dams, 34 minor dams, 419 miles of canals, 613 miles of laterals, 51 miles of tunnels, 123 miles of pipelines, six powerplants, and 14 pumping stations. These projects provide culinary water to nearly a million and-a-half people and irrigation water to over 400,000 acres of cropland each year. These projects provide additional benefits including flood control and power generation, 50 miles of Class 1 stream fisheries (75 percent of the state of Utah's total) and over two million visitor-days of recreation annually.
