Project title: Improved Efficiency of Operations-Literature Review
Project researchers: Gary Osburn and Mark Armijo
Project ID: FI.8
Duration of project: FY98

Research Problem and Background:
The Power System Diagnostics Research Project is formulated from the demonstrated problem areas in Reclamation electrical facilities and by the research-oriented requests of project personnel. The program focuses on improving the reliability, efficiency, and safety of Reclamation facilities and the associated interconnected electric power system. The project tasks are multi-faceted and evolved to solve repetitive problems or needs that are common Reclamation-wide.

Project Objectives:
The goal was to identify the optimum research possibilities that will lead to reduced O&M costs and protection of Reclamation’s Infrastructure.

Overall Outcome or Conclusions:
The first of several objectives of this project was to circulate a brief summary outlining the topic of Operations Research. This summary was sent out to various area, Denver, and Washington personnel, with a request for feedback on the feasibility of Operations Research. There was a slow response to initial telephone and e-mail inquiries. Follow-up phone calls are necessary to promote more dialogue on the subject. We are continuing efforts to complete contacts and receive feedback about Operations Research

Partners:
There has been interaction and guidance from members in the Hydroelectric Research Group (86-68450), as well as from various personnel in the Pacific Northwest, Great Plains, Mid-Pacific, and Upper Colorado regions.

Publications and/or Other Deliverables:
Two brief papers, one discussing Operations Research, the other outlining Operations Research and its goals and objectives are being for input throughout the various area and regional Reclamation offices. A brief final scoping report, approximately 8-10 pages, appropriate for submittal and distribution is being prepared and will include all suggestions, inquiries, and concerns received regarding Operations Research. Peer review will be conducted either by mechanical personnel or hydroelectric research personnel. To date, no reports have been made available to the public.
