Frequently Asked Questions

Research:

What is Reclamation researching?

Reclamation's research focuses on applying scientific and technological advances to address the water management challenges our water managers and water users face. This research builds on the data and the scientific advances from the USGS and other federal and state agencies and other institutions.

Why does the Reclamation have its own research program, why not use research from others like USGS?

Reclamation research focuses its work on those areas of significance to water management challenges we face. While other agencies do provide valuable research Reclamation can use, the nature of nationwide priority setting means that issues important to us don't get addressed. For example, Reclamation researches advance desalination to develop new water resources for that cost less and are more environmentally friendly.

Financial resources to address water and related resources management challenges through research are modest, especially in comparison to the enormity of those challenges. These activities have not and do not rise to a sufficient level to receive funding in other organizations; however, their pursuit is vital to the successful accomplishment Reclamation's mission. We strive to ensure that Reclamation's research portfolio addresses the unique mission related challenges faced by the Bureau. This program is committed to "tactical research" --we have a research strategy to meet Reclamation's specific challenges in the years ahead.

How does the S&T program support Reclamation's mission and goals?

Tactical research solves water management challenges posed by the operation of existing infrastructure designed, constructed and owned by Reclamation.

Who does research for the Bureau of Reclamation?

Much of Reclamation's research is conducted by experts within Reclamation. They come from a wide range of disciplines: civil, chemical, electrical, hydraulic, and mechanical engineering; chemistry; botany; biology; ecology; sociology; geography; economics; meteorology; physical sciences; and more.
