Pilot Butte Dam is located in the Wind River Basin of west central Wyoming. Bedrocks, in ascending order are Pre-cambrian gneiss and metasediments, Paleozoic to Cretaceous sediments, Eocene-age Wind River sandstones, terrace gravel and modern alluvium.
