Federal Columbia River Power System |
|
Overview |
The Bureau of Reclamation and US Army Corps of Engineers own and operate the Federal Columbia River Power System (FCRPS), a series of hydropower projects on the Columbia and lower Snake rivers that collectively provide about 75% of the electricity used in the Pacific Northwest. The Bonneville Power Administration (BPA) markets and distributes the power generated from these dams. Revenues collected through power rates cover the cost of operating and maintaining these projects and contribute to the region's efforts to protect and rebuild fish and wildlife populations in the Columbia River Basin. Although 12 of the FCRPS dams are owned and operated by the Corps, the two Reclamation dams—Hungry Horse in Montana and Grand Coulee in Washington —provide about one-half of the reservoir storage in the system. BPA, the Corps, and Reclamation are responsible for operating this system in compliance with the Endangered Species Act and other Federal laws. more>> |
