Reclamation Hires Civil Engineer for Salmon and Lemhi Basins
The Bureau of Reclamation has hired a full-time civil engineer to help implement a mitigation program for fish habitat, including efforts aimed at removing instream barriers to migrating fish in the area around Salmon, Idaho.
Brian Hamilton will work with local landowners and groups in the Lemhi and other parts of the Upper Salmon River Basin to provide assistance in removing instream barriers to salmon and steelhead migration. Other fish habitat improvement projects include installing or modifying fish screens and improving stream flows by way of water acquisition.
Hamilton will provide engineering support for salmon restoration projects in the Salmon and Lemhi River basins. He will assist in designing and building projects that meet the needs of irrigators, while improving conditions for salmon.
Hamilton will help implement Reclamation activities in the Salmon and Lemhi basins as outlined under the Biological Opinion issued in December 2000 by the National Marine Fisheries Service on the Federal Columbia River Power System.
He is a graduate of Colorado State University where he earned a bachelor of science in engineering. He also earned an agricultural engineering degree from the University of Idaho. Hamilton has 11 years experience in engineering and agriculture with Reclamation where he dealt with water measurement and water management issues.
Hamilton, his wife Denne, and children will reside in Salmon, Idaho, where he hopes to enjoy hunting and fishing on his time off.
Hamilton joins Al Simpson, who has worked in Salmon on the fish habitat mitigation program for about two years. Simpson, a Reclamation fish biologist, and Hamilton will be working as a team to implement the biological and physical components of the habitat improvement program in the basin.
