Reclmation Hires Sub-Basin Liaison for Grangeville Area
The Bureau of Reclamation has hired a full-time sub-basin liaison to assist willing landowners in improving habitat for fish in the Middle Fork Clearwater and Little Salmon basins.
Dana Weigel, Reclamation fisheries biologist, will work with local agencies and private land owners to identify salmon habitat restoration projects. Technical assistance will be provided in designing or modifying fish screens, and improving stream flows by way of water acquisition.
Weigel will coordinate Reclamation activities in the basins under the Biological Opinion issued in December 2000 by the National Marine Fisheries Service on the Federal Columbia River Power System.
Additional duties will include work on Lewiston Orchards Irrigation District ESA consultation, and project identification for the FCRPS research, monitoring, and evaluation program.
"I'm looking forward to the challenge of implementing salmon restoration while working with diverse interest groups toward a common goal," Weigel said.
Weigel has a bachelor of science degree in Aquatic Environments from Allegheny College, in Pennsylvania, and a masters of science in Fisheries Biology from the University of Minnesota. She has been with Reclamation for two years where she worked on endangered species projects. Previously, she worked as a fisheries biologist for the Nez Perce Tribe in the Orofino Field Office.
While working for the Nez Perce Tribe, she conducted a study on westslope cutthroat trout hybridization with stocked rainbow trout in the North Fork Clearwater and Lochsa basins.
Weigle will live in the community of Stites, Idaho.
For further information, contact Ms. Weigle at (208) 983-1950. Her office is located in the Nez Perce National Forest Supervisor's building at Route 2, Box 475, Grangeville ID 83530.
