Reclamation Awards Major Contract at Grand Coulee Dam

The Bureau of Reclamation has awarded a New Mexico firm a contract for replacing circuit breakers at Grand Coulee Dam. The Gardner Zemke Company of Albuquerque was the low bidder at $9,749,706 for a contract to supply 12 circuit breakers for huge irrigation pumps and hydroelectric generators at the Reclamation project in north central Washington. An option in the contract for an additional nine breakers brings the potential contract value to $16,258,630.

The breakers will replace equipment installed in the 1950s and 1960s, according to Grand Coulee Power Manager David Lyngholm, with the work beginning in the fall of 2003 and completion by the end of 2005.

Grand Coulee Dam is located on the Columbia River about 90 miles west of Spokane, Washington. It was completed in 1942 and today serves as a multipurpose facility providing water for irrigation, recreation, fish and wildlife, hydroelectric power production, and also flood control.
