Reclamation Issues Draft Environmental Impact Statement
The Bureau of Reclamation has released for public comment its draft environmental impact statement outlining the proposed Resource Management Plan for Potholes Reservoir located about 12 miles east of Ephrata, Washington.
The RMP will provide management guidance for the land and water resources within Reclamation’s jurisdiction over the next 10 years. The draft EIS is the document that outlines the proposed alternatives for the various levels of recreation development and resource management.
There are four alternatives outlined in the document including the preferred alternative, and a no action alternative. The issues and concerns covered in the document include vegetation, wildlife, fish, cultural, recreation, and social and economic resources.
The preferred alternative balances Reclamation’s management and the public’s long-term vision for Potholes Reservoir and recognizes the need to protect the natural and cultural environment while supporting the overall recreational interests of visitors.
Potholes Reservoir is impounded by O’Sullivan Dam. The reservoir collects return flows from all irrigation in the upper portion of the Columbia Basin Project for reuse in the southern portion. The reservoir is home to a variety of fish and wildlife, and is also a popular recreation spot.
Public comment will be accepted until March 27, by writing to Mr. Jim Blanchard, The Bureau of Reclamation, PO Box 815, Ephrata WA 98823.
Comments may also be made during a public hearing set for March 13. The hearing will be held at the Midway Learning Center, 505 South C Street, in Moses Lake, Washington, from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. or 7:00 to 9:00 p.m.
