Reclamation Provides Fishing Access in Closed Area

The Bureau of Reclamation has opened a fenced section of shoreline adjacent to the Minidoka Dam and powerplant for local fishermen who were denied access recently due to safety and security concerns.

Stuart Stanger, Deputy Area Manager of Snake River Area Office, said he met with local residents to discuss providing temporary access while reviewing safety and security issues at the site.

"We have an obligation to provide a safe environment for employees and visitors while also demonstrating that we are good neighbors to citizens who have had access to this fishing site for many years," Stanger said.

Stanger and Larry Hieb, Minidoka operations and maintenance manager, are reviewing several options and a proposal that will fit into Reclamation’s safety and security plans as well as leaving the area open for local resident fishermen.

"Temporary access to the area is being provided while permanent options are being reviewed, Stanger said. "I am optomistic that safer access can be provided while still meeting our security needs. I ask that everyone be cognizant of the obvious hazards of fishing along the river and particularly near our facilities."
