Research
Internal Research: Science and Technology
Reclamation's Science and Technology Research and Development program is one of the funding sources for research conducted within the TSC Water Treatment Engineering and Research Team to meet Reclamation's needs.
External Research: Desalination and Water Purification Research & Development (DWPR) Program
The DWPR Program funds competitive, merit-reviewed, external research projects to develop more cost-effective, technologically efficient means to implement water desalination.
Research Facilities
Research Projects
The following are examples of ongoing and recently completed projects that the TSC Water Treatment Engineering and Research Team have worked on :
Expeditionary Unit Water Purifier
The Expeditionary Unit Water Purifier is a 100,000 gpd portable water treatment system that can be used for disaster relief and other humanitarian aid situations. The EUWP was used to provide water potable water to the Biloxi Regional Medical Center following hurricane Katrina. Additional, the Water Treatment Engineering Research Team is currently conducting testing to obtain EPA Environmental Technology Verification for the EUWP in Gallup, New Mexico.
Vertical Tube Evaporator
Reclamation is funding a pilot test project to demonstrate the technical and economic feasibility of using geothermal energy to produce potable water in situations such as the Salton Sea where potable water is needed, steam heat is available, and there is a nearby source of impaired water.
Long Beach
Reclamation is working with the Long Beach (CA) Water department on the development of the two-pass nanofiltration desalination process they invented.
San Luis Drainage Feature Reevaluation
The Bureau of Reclamation is re-evaluating options for providing drainage service to the San Luis Unit of the Central Valley Project.
Brackish Groundwater National Desalination Research Facility
The National Research Center for Desalination of Brackish Groundwater will be a facility for testing and evaluating novel desalination technologies for the treatment of brackish groundwater.
