Vertical Tube Evaporator Thermal Desalination Pilot Test
Reclamation is funding a pilot test project to demonstrate the technical and economic feasibility of using geothermal energy to produce potable water in situations such as the Salton Sea where potable water is needed, steam heat is available, and there is a nearby source of impaired water. This renewable energy-driven desalination project uses low temperature waste heat from the geothermal power plant to produced distilled water. The brine concentrate from this process will be used to replenish the geothermal aquifer while solving the concentrate disposal issue from the desalting process.
The VTE project is being conducted under a cooperative agreement with Sephton Water Technology and CalEnergy Operating Corporation. Work on the project started in early FY05, and the equipment is now installed and ready for testing.
