Desalination and Water Purification Research Program

The Desalination and Water Purification Research program was established to facilitate partnerships with academia, private industry, and local communities to develop more cost-effective, technologically efficient means by which to desalinate water.

Program Description

The Desalination and Water Purification Research & Development (DWPR) Program was authorized by Congress under the Water Desalination Act (Act) of 1996. The primary goal of the DWPR program is to develop more cost-effective, technologically efficient, and implementable means to desalinate water.

Currently Funded Projects

In November 2005, Reclamation awarded over $1.7 million for 16 desalination research and cooperative agreements. Including matching contributions, the total investment in desalination research amounted to over $6 million.
