JANUARY 2004 ABSTRACTS

TITLE: Small-Scale Renewable Energy-Based Desalination Systems
NAME: Ken Touryan
AGENCY: National Renewable Energy Laboratory

ABSTRACT:
Several small RO desalination units were purchased from the USA and sent to Jordan and the Palestinian Authority for installation in villages with brackish wells. One of these units is solar powered, with 17kW peak photovoltaic panels, DC/AC inverters, a battery bank and controls. The unit is capable of operating by solar power or through the grid, with automatic switching capabilities from one mode to the other. NREL's hybrid power simulation facility was used to design and test the system.
