ABSTRACT:
The WSWRD of EPA has been engaged in a number of studies concerning the cost and performance of membrane processes for treating drinking water in support of regulations for control of various microbiological and chemical contaminants. Final reports for a number of ETV projects are found on the web site www.epa.gov/etv. In recent months, several water security projects have been conducted and are ongoing for the evaluation of POU treatment devices and toxicity detection kits. Studies on three commercially available POU systems are ongoing for challenges of various bacteria and virus agents. Ten treatment devices of each product line were tested to observe variations in performance under varying conditions. For some systems significant differences in performance under various conditions were observed. Final reports for the initial studies are expected in the spring 2004. Studies for water security chemical agent challenges are expected to be underway in the spring 2004. Reports for several rapid toxicity detection systems are available at www.epa.gov/etv. Also, presented were results on bench-scale RO studies for the removal of about 30 organic chemicals under EPA's CCL initiative. Studies were conducted under variations of different pressure and recovery conditions. A journal article is anticipated for publication.
