Earth School
The Bureau of Reclamation Materials Engineering and Research Laboratory (MERL), in conjunction with the Engineering Geology Group, will be presenting "Earth School 2008." The 3-day course will feature instructions and hands-on training in visual identification of soils using the Unified Soils Classification System, laboratory and field soils testing methods, geologic logging, and common earthwork construction testing methods. This course will take place from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. each day, February 12-14, 2008 , at the Denver Federal Center , Building 56 Laboratories.
Topics will include:
- Principles of investigation
- Laboratory and field testing of soil
- Both classroom and hands-on instruction in use of Unified Soils Classification Method of soil identification and description
- Fundamentals of earth work construction testing methods
- Fundamentals of geologic logging
- Dealing with problem soils
- Rock core handling
- Environmental samples
This course is designed for the Department of the Interior geologists, engineers, inspectors, materials technicians, and anyone else working with soils. The goal of this course is to provide instruction in techniques common throughout the Department. Training covering this subject matter is not readily available from other sources. This training will be conducted by Mr. Amster Howard, and Reclamation MERL and Engineering Geology Group staff. Tuition will be $1,960.00.
This training is limited to 30 participants and will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis. Registration will be accepted only in DOI LEARN at https://doilearn.doi.gov , no later than Friday, January 11, 2008 , by using keywords " Earth School " when searching the catalog. Participants will be placed on the roster once electronic supervisory approval has been obtained.
Confirmation will be emailed to attendees with logistical information shortly after the deadline date. Participants selected, but who cancel without a substitute, will be charged full tuition.
