Bureau of Reclamation’s 2013 Earth School —
Visual Identification of Soils and Introduction to Geotechnical Investigation
March 12–14, 2013
Reclamation's Materials Engineering and Research Laboratory Group and Engineering Geology Group are co-sponsoring the 2013 Earth School: “Visual Identification of Soils and Introduction to Geotechnical Investigation.” The session offers hands-on training on visual identification of soils using the Unified Soils Classification System, laboratory and field soils testing methods, geologic logging, and common earthwork construction testing methods, and it features an increased emphasis on the technical details of identifying and classifying soil samples. A team of well-qualified Reclamation specialists will lead the training sessions.
Learning objectives: Participants will increase their knowledge of standard techniques used to visually classify and recognize soils in civil engineering projects, plus various exploration methods and construction techniques using earth materials.
Topics will include:
- Principles of investigation
- Drilling and soil sampling
- Both classroom and hands-on instruction in use of unified soils classification methods for soil identification and description
- Field and laboratory testing
- Fundamentals of earth work construction
- Dealing with problem soils
Who should attend: The course provides an outstanding development opportunity for Department of the Interior (DOI) employees as well as other Federal, State, and county employees who are directly responsible for the technical details of identifying and classifying soil samples.
Time: The course begins at 8:00 a.m. on Tuesday, March 12, and concludes at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 14, 2013.
Location: The course is being held at the Denver Federal Center, Building 56 Laboratories, Denver, Colorado.
Tuition: The tuition cost for this course is $2,200, payable upon registration. Participants who cancel without a substitute will be charged full tuition.
Registration: The course is limited to 30 participants, and seats will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis. The registration deadline is Friday, February 22, 2013. All DOI personnel must register in DOI LEARN at: http://www.doi.gov/doilearn/. Use the keywords “Earth School” to search for the course. To pay for the course, Reclamation employees should enter their 18-digit cost authority number in the "Special Billing Notes" field of the DOI Learn registration form. Other (non-Reclamation) DOI participants, in addition to registering in DOI Learn, should also fill out and submit the separate payment form by email. Registrants will be placed on the roster once electronic supervisory approval has been obtained and tuition payment information received.
Attendees from outside of DOI need to submit only the payment form. The participant will be registered for the course upon receipt of the completed payment form.
