The early life stages and histories, taxonomy, and ecology of fishes in the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta and its adjacent waters are described in this report. Information for 48 species representing 22 families is included. For each species, information pertaining to spawning, life stage taxonomic characteristics, life history, and ecological status is presented. The objective of this report is to provide information that will allow a clear identification of all early life stages of each fish species present in the study area. More attention is given to indigenous sympatric species. Species’ current ecological roles in the fish community and their importance to the public are explained.
