Staged Fault Testing
A 43,000-ampere phase-to-ground arcing fault at the Grand Coulee hydropower complex 500-kilovolt switchyard, Grand Coulee Dam, WA. Staged fault testing is employed to verify and evaluate the operation and reliability of power system protective equipment, such as circuit breakers and protective relaying schemes, during a critical power system disturbance. Major power system testing of this nature requires careful and detailed planning to ensure satisfactory test results and the continued reliable operation of the system.
