Tony L. Wahl, Zeynep Erdogan. 2008. "Hole Erosion Tests for Wolf Creek Dam". Bureau of Reclamation, Report Number PAP-977.
Abstract: Hole erosion tests were performed on 20 samples of cohesive soils recovered from drill holes in the embankment and foundation areas of Wolf Creek Dam. Erosion rate indices for the materials varied from 3.5 (moderately rapid erosion) to 5.2 (very slow erosion), and critical shear stresses to initiate erosion ranged from about 100 Pa to beyond 1600 Pa. Two soils could not be eroded in the test facility, despite efforts to increase the applied stress by the use of larger than normal pre-drilled holes. Erosion rate indices were weakly correlated with Torvane shear strength values and the Liquid Limit and Plasticity Index. Significant improvements to Reclamation's test apparatus, test methodology, and analysis procedures were made during the course of the testing.
