A modified scatter diagram will help pinpoint which study assumptions are critical indicating a need to verify these assumptions. Alternatives will address needs only if underlying assumptions are on target, so examining and documenting your underlying assumptions is critical.

How Do I Use It?

1. List assumptions.
2. Examine each assumption, asking two questions: Is it certain? Is it critical?
3. Draw a chart with certainty on the (x) axis and critical on the (y) axis.
4. Mark where that assumption is on the chart.
5. Analyze critical but uncertain assumptions.
6. Document this analysis.
