Recreation Advisory: October and November Interpretive Events at New Melones Lake
Ranger-Guided Walks & Hikes:
October 9, 10:30 a.m., "Natural Bridges in Fall" Wild grapes and Red buds offer stunning color on this 2-mile walk to a limestone cave formed by Coyote Creek. Meet at Natural Bridges trail head on Parrott's Ferry Road. October 10, 10:30 a.m., "Upper & Lower Carson Creek" Fall birds migrating, grassland vistas, and lake views are present on this strenuous 4-mile loop walk from the top of Carson Creek hill, to the lake, and back to the top. Meet at the upper Carson Creek trail head in the Glory Hole Recreation Area. October 23, 10:30 a.m., "Heron Point Rambling" This walk offers approximately 2-miles of easy pace with sun and shade, fall colors, and lake views. Meet at Heron Point Day Use Area in the Tuttletown Recreation Area. October 24, 10:30 a.m., "Trees & Shrubs of Angels Creek Loop" 2-3 miles of rolling hills, and shaded glens offer a variety of trees and shrubs that were utilized by Miwok and early European settlers. Learn a bit of foothill ethnobotany. Meet at Angels Creek boat ramp in the Glory Hole Recreation Area. October 31, 10:30 a.m., "Natural Bridges Caverns" Let’s go beyond the usual places and explore the LOWER bridge. Be prepared for walking on a slippery, creek-side, informal track on a difficult 2-mile hike with rock scrambling.. See riparian beauty and geology, and hear tales of “Old Batch”. November 7, 10:30 a.m., "Autumn Changes at Natural Bridges" Fall should be in full swing at our local geological wonder. Limestone caves carved by Coyote Creek, moss, and lichen greenery on this 2-mile walk. Meet at the Natural Bridges trail head on Parrott’s Ferry Road.

November 13, 10:30 a.m., "Table Mountain Vistas" A climb to the top of Table Mountain can take your breath away, for the beauty of 360-degree views and for the effort of getting there! A ¼-mile steep rocky section of trail gets the heart pumping, but the rest of this scenic 2-mile trail is moderate. Peregrine falcons have been spotted flying along the cliff face. November 14, 10:30 a.m., "Carson Creek Loop" A repeat of the October 10th hike for those who want a bit more of a leg stretch. Meet at the upper Carson Creek trail head. 4 miles, moderate.

November 20, 10:30 a.m., "GPS Practice Hike at Old Town" For those of you who enjoy the challenge of a "treasure hunt", bring your GPS units for a course laid out at a new location. Pre-registration is required. Phone 536-9094 Ex.22. All levels of experience welcomed.

November 21, 10:30 a.m., "Peoria Mountain" This 3-mile ramble links jeep trails with horse tracks and views of the dam and Iron Canyon. Rolling green hills (if we get some rain). Meet at the Peoria Mountain Equestrian Staging Area on Peoria Flat Road. November 27, 10:30 a.m., "Italians at Angels Creek" Join Ranger Guida for a nice 2-3 mile walk and learn how the Italians brought stone ovens to the Mother Lode. Lake views, maybe an eagle or two. Meet at the Angels Creek boat ramp.

Bring water, a snack, and wear sun screen and sturdy shoes. Heavy rain cancels these events. Phone 536-9094 Ex.22 or 536-9543 for directions and additional information.
