Walker River Basin Acquisition Program EIS

Summary:
The Walker River Basin Acquisition is funded under the Bureau of Reclamation's Desert Terminal Lakes (DTL) Program created under Public Law 101-171 in 2002. The law set aside $200 million to provide water to at-risk natural desert terminal lakes. The EIS is analyzing implementation of legislation directing Reclamation to provide $70 million to the University of Nevada Reno to acquire from willing sellers land, water appurtenant to the land, and related interests in the Walker River Basin, Nevada. The funding is also for the University to establish and administer an agricultural and natural resources center to undertake research, restoration, and educational activities in the Walker River Basin. An additional public law (PL 111-85) was passed in Oct. 2009 adding National Fish and Wildlife Foundation (NFWF) along with the University to receive funding from the $70 million for acquisitions. PL 111-85 also allocated an additional $66 million to NFWF for a Walker River Restoration Program.

Status:
11/25/2009:
Notice of Intent to prepare an EIS published in Federal Register in September 2007. Four public scoping meetings held in October 2007. Public Scoping Report released April 2008. Three informational public meetings held in June 2008. Draft EIS available for review the week of July 20, 2009. Public hearings held on August 17-20, 2009. Comment period extended to October 5, 2009. FEIS expected December 2009.
