YAWMS is a networked Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system designed to:
- Remotely gather water flows and elevation data from wells in the Colorado River valley near Yuma, Arizona, to provide inputs for groundwater maps , and
- Remotely gather power consumption data to maximize pumping efficiency and identify maintenance requirements.
YAWMS is used to monitor and control 154 wells in the Yuma area. Of these, 97 are groundwater pumping wells, and 57 are observation wells. The Bureau of Reclamation controls 66 of the groundwater pumping wells. Data from these sites is gathered from real-time monitoring and updated every hour.
An introduction to how groundwater affects agriculture and real estate in our area can be found at: Groundwater Basics. An introduction to the YAWMS SCADA system is at: YAWMS SCADA.
